The Syllabus:
English 8.
Course Description
Eighth grade English emphasizes the skills of reading, comprehension, writing, and organization.
Students in the eighth grade English/Language Arts are expected to do the following: engage in independent, self-selected reading as well as teacher-assigned reading; read for pleasure, meaning, and thematic analysis in literature; make associations and connections between literature and history concepts; learn to analyze different types of selections (short stories, poetry, novels, biographies, plays and non-fiction); and increase vocabulary skills. Students are also expected to continue to essays, self-edit writing, develop body paragraphs and transitions, and write for a variety of purposes. Students also write narratives, responses to literature, research reports, argumentative compositions, and write creatively.
During the course of the year, we will review grammar, usage and mechanics, and develop writing skills/writing process. Literature will be studied in conjunction with writing. The study of Greek and Latin roots is a vital component of 8th grade English. There will also be an emphasis on using technology to develop the 21st-century learner. This year, we will focus on the concepts of ethics and morality. I will also supplement curriculum using TED Talks and Genius Hour.
